Who we are…
Justice Unforgotten evolved from the Friends of the Justice Cemetery, located in the southeast corner of Jackson County, Georgia, near the Mulberry River. We are descendants—both biological and social—of those buried in this antebellum, biracial cemetery.
There are 23 graves currently identified by name and date. Nearby are dozens of field stones that likely indicate the graves of unidentified enslaved or emancipated persons.
We have come together to preserve and care for the Justice Cemetery, including researching the lives of all those buried there and the local communities they and their descendants formed.
Justice Unforgotten seeks to preserve this place not only as a cemetery, but as a community—bringing together all those connected to it and sharing it as a vital cultural and historical resource.
Through our research and educational outreach we aim to better understand the complex history of race relations in Jackson County.
The graves tell us stories of love, loss, endurance, and injustice. The lives of our biological and social ancestors—their achievements and their errors, their virtues and their sins—can teach us how to build a more just future.
