Virginia “Jennie” Josephine Venable (1847–1887)

Virginia Josephine “Jennie” Venable was the first-born child and only daughter of Martha A. B. Justice and John Moorman Venable Jr. She was born on January 14, 1847, at the Venable family farm, located near the homestead of her parents and grandparents. Jennie was the second grandchild of Allen and Susan Justice.

She grew up surrounded by nine younger brothers:

: Jennie Wallis

On June 14, 1867, Jennie’s mother, Martha Justice Venable, passed away. Later that year, on November 24, 1867, Jennie married John Jackson Wallis (1837–1914), a local farmer and Confederate veteran who had served as 5th Sergeant in Company B of the 16th Georgia Infantry. Her father, Captain John Moorman Venable, had also served in the same regiment. In his will, Captain Venable noted that “my daughter Virginia J. Wallis having already received her part of my estate,” suggesting that Jennie had inherited a portion of the family land during his lifetime.

Jennie and John Jackson began their family the following year. Their first child, Joseph Oscar Wallis (1868–1868), died shortly after birth. They went on to have nine more children, including twin daughters:

Jennie died in 1887 at the age of 40. She was buried in the Justice Cemetery, where her grave lies beside that of her husband, John Jackson Wallis, and near the resting place of his second wife, Sarah Garner (1863–1916). Jennie’s death was a deep loss to her husband, children, extended family, and community
