John Randolph Flanigan (1894-1858)

John Randolph was the eldest son of Allen Monso Flanigan and Effie J. Randolph. He had an older sister, Melvina C. Flanigan (1893–1949), and a younger brother, Allen Justice Flanigan (1896–1958).

At the age of 21, John married Kathleen Holder, then 20, the daughter of John N. Holder, who had served alongside John’s father in the Georgia State Legislature during 1907–1908.

The couple had one daughter, Kathleen Holder Flanigan (1920–1978). John faced personal struggles that included alcoholism, and the marriage ended in divorce in 1924. Afterward, Kathleen moved out of Georgia with their daughter.

In January 1919, while his brother Allen was serving with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in France during World War I, John mortgaged the “old John Gillam Justice home place” with its 350 acres. The promissory notes went unpaid, and the property went into foreclosure, ultimately being sold by the Atlanta Auction Company.

John’s mother, Effie Randolph Flanigan, died in 1945 and was buried in the Justice Cemetery. John himself died on April 19, 1958, in Hall County, Georgia, and was laid to rest in the Justice Cemetery by his brother Allen. He was the last person to be buried there.
