Mattie J. Venable (1876–1926)

Mattie Venable was born to Allen Leonidas Venable (1849-1901) and Mary Elizabeth “Molly” Lyle (1853–1940).

Mattie had three sisters and two brothers.

  • Eula Mae Venable (1873–1948)

  • Elmer Jerrell Venable (1880–1950)

  • Herman Columbus Venable (1885–1953)

  • Alma Ruth Venable (1893–1894) (In Justice Cemetery)

Her youngest sister, Alma Ruth, died before her second birthday. She was laid to rest in the Justice Cemetery. “Happy infant early blest, rest in peaceful slumber, rest!” reads her tombstone.

Mattie’s mother outlived her husband by nearly four decades. Mattie did not marry. She had six nephews and two nieces born to Eula Mae Sims, Hernan C and Elmer Venable. Mattie remained in the family home with her mother and died on April 7 of 1926 at 50 years of age and was buried in the Justice Cemetery.

Her mother had her tombstone to read: “She was too good, too gentle and fair to dwell in this world of care”
